Getting Things Done
Sep 09
I took a class a while back about managing projects and stress at work. Increasingly we are asked to do more with less staff so the job provide all these classes to help us manage our increasing workloads. Enough said about that… one of the topics that we touched on in class was some of the tools we can use to manage our time. Now there are a whole slew of GTD apps out there and I’ve been searching for one for quite some time. The problem is that any GTD app that I use has to meet four basic requirements
- User-friendly- I don’t want to spend lots of time learning how to use this app
- Portability- I need to have an app that allows me to see my to-do list and other action items and beep at me when things are due, otherwise I’ll forget them
- Email integration- it would be helpful if the app could integrate with my email system somehow. I get a lot of action items via email and this would be very useful if I could somehow integrate the two
- Cost- I don’t want to pay much for this app- over $50 is too much
I went to the app store and found some interesting stuff. I started with the free ones: Zenbe Lists, IProcrastinator and today I came across Things (sounds like the snack Tings) which I haven’t downloaded yet because I’m checking to see how I can integrate it with my email system. If anyone out there have Things working with Novel Groupwise let me know. I just noticed that Things support XML… hmmpf. I’ll keep searching for now…

We use GroupWise at work as well. I have a system that I can simply forward any email that is actionable, but not at the moment, to my GTD, then the next time I access the system, I just assign it to a project, context and date where appropriate. The application allows me to view my entire GTD at work on my Win machine, at home on my Macs and even on my cell phone. And another app lets me call in tasks to my GTD without any writing or typing, great for those thoughts that hit me while driving. I’ve written about my experiences with GTD in a blog post at http://johnkendrick.wordpress.com/2008/03/27/more-getting-things-done/ John
