Playing videos from Veoh.com on your Mac

Aug 10

findonmac.jpgSo ever since I finished with Season 3 of Dr. Who I’ve been on the hunt for more. Not wanting to plop down any more money for iTunes, I decided to search for free downloads on the net and found some references to Veoh. I signed up and downloaded the player although it seemed to me that it wouldn’t work with my Mac but I decided to give it a try anyway. After downloading the player and installing it, I proceeded to download the first and second episodes of Dr. Who Season 4. This took about 6 minutes per episode and I was on my merry way. After the download I decided it was time to start watching so I hit the play button. All seemed well except, for the black screen and no audio. After doing some digging around I decided to try the mother of all video players which I already had on my Mac; Videolan’s VLC Player. Whenever I have trouble playing any video including DVDs… VLC Player is usually pretty good at playing the files. Anyway, the following steps should help you out if you run into this problem.

  1. Launch the Veoh Player
  2. Make sure Library is highlighted and right click on the video that you wish to view
  3. Select Find on my Mac from the Pop-up window
  4. Drag the file and Drop it onto VLC Player (construction cone icon on your dock)
  5. Enjoy!

It was a bit of a work around and not as easy to download as iTunes but hey it’s full screen and free and I don’t have to watch any commercials either. Sweet!

Alavert

Aug 08

I was feeling quite awful yesterday. My eyes were itchy, my throat was scratchy, I was congested and I was in a funk and did not like it. I decided enough was enough and went to see the Dr. salavert.gifince I’ve been having some issues on and off for a few months. My last bout must have been due to some exposure to the crud in the basement but I had no clue what was what so I went in. The Dr. saw me for less than 15 minutes and told me that everything seemed normal except that my nose were a bit irritated (that’s because I was blowing it so much) and yes I had some congestion going on but nothing severe. I wasn’t in pain but I felt awful anyway. She handed me a box of Alavert and told me to take one when I went home. Upon reaching home I popped one into my mouth and was surprised at how quick it dissolved. I fed myself some dinner after that and in less than an hour I was felling pretty good. No more weird, groggy, nasty uncomfortable feeling and my congestion went away I could breathe out of both nostrils without problems…. Wooooah that pill left a really sweet feeling in my mouth. What the heck… oh wait a minute my hands are starting to get a bit red, I’m starting to get a little tingly in my fingers… odd that only happens when… I have anything with corn syrup in it… what the heck is in this pill? I turned over the box and noticed artificial and natural flavor (oh dear), mannitol (don’t recognize), corn syrup (oh crap… no wonder). Great the allergy medicine has an ingredient that I’m allergic to or have sensitivity to… Fantastic! Well I can’t take these things anyway and I have an appointment with an allergist to figure out what is is going on… next week stay tuned.

Tubalicious

Aug 05

I have this facination with claw-foot tubs. Don’t know why they just look relaxing to me. After a little investigation I found out that not only are they expensive (a decent sized one goes for $1600 with faucet assembly) but they are a pain to install. Still I like them so when I came across this beauty it made me smile :-) This is one of the more creative uses I’ve seen… Makes me want to jump right in.

Rediscovering Dr. Who

Aug 05

drwho1.jpg I used to love to watch Dr. Who has a kid. I remembered the Tardis, the Daleks and most of all the the quirky Dr. played by Tom Baker back in those days. When the new Dr. who (the 10th Dr. played by David Tenant) finally arrived on iTunes I was excited as a school girl and decided to give it a go. I started with Season 3 since that seemed interesting to me and I like to start with the latest season and work my way backwards (Odd I know but I like doing that) so I starting with Episode 1: “Smith & Jones.” Its been great fun and I thought that David Tennant and Freema Agyeman did a bang up job of the whole thing. I can hardly wait for Season 4… what is up with that? Its not on iTunes, Hulu or SciFi.com. I haven’t had this much fun watching a TV show since Firefly. Just glad to see that Dr. Who is on the iTunes store finally. Now I have another reason to procrastinate :-) .

Driving While Stupid

Aug 04

black_jawbone.pngI was in the car the other day with a friend of mine she was driving. It was a peaceful drive back and forth on the highway and I appreciated the scenery lake and all. There are generally two driving directions here in Upstate, NY: uphill and downhill. While going downhill my friend decided that she needed to make some phone calls. Not a problem people make phone calls all the time in their cars. However, here in NYS Effective November 1, 2001 ” Routine use of cellular telephones while driving is prohibited in New York State, pursuant to Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 1225c.” Exceptions:

  • Driver uses a hands-free phone or one so equipped as to allow use of the phone without the use of either hand.
  • The purpose of the call is to communicate an emergency to police, fire, ambulance, or doctor.
  • Operators of authorized emergency vehicles in performance of their official duties

The fine is $100. I know this and I specifically went and bought myself a bluetooth headset so that I don’t have to get myself in this situation. In fact, most of the time I turn off my phone when I’m in transit or pull over and make a call if I need to. I see people driving like idiots around town all the time nine times out of ten, they are paying more attention yapping on the cellphone than to the road situation in front of them. Anyway, I did not tell my friend that day not to talk on the phone while driving (mainly because I was taken aback she’s usually so responsible) but I most definitely should have. Next time I’ll ask her not to use her cellphone while driving with me in the car upfront.

Doozla

Aug 03

I like to doodle when I’m in a good mood. Most of the time I just grab a piece of paper and do my thing but once in a while I get brave and create a doodle to unload on a special person. I’m usually thinking of doodling something specific but now and again I just let the creative juices flow. I’m not great at it my brother is the artist of the family if there is any artist in the family but I just like doing this to have a bit of fun. Anyway, I was looking for a tool to help me do this and for some reason Plasq’s Comic Life jumped into my head right away. These are the same folks that made skitch so I figured that I would start there. Skitch was not exactly what I wanted and Comic Life was not suitable either but while mucking around on thier site I ran into a product that they have called Doozla. They describe Doozla as an easy-to-use drawing application for children (wish my niece had a Mac so I could get her this program). Anyway, true to their word it is easy to use and I have been having a blast doing my random acts of sketching madness. Doozla goes for $25 which is not bad for an app like this but I would have like to see $15 instead. It runs OK on my Mac Mini but I do notice that things tend to slow down a bit when my external HD is being compressed. Overall its the simplest and most straightforward app for the kid in all of us.doozla1.jpg

Why am I still up…

Aug 02

addict.jpgGosh how did that happen? Here I am still awake tap typing away at this computer. Plenty to do later I should go get some Zzzzs but I’ve been having way too much sugar so I’m awake instead. I’m here messing with this blog trying to figure out how to update my blog using Mars Edit for the second time. The first time I used it I didn’t like it one bit it was a bit clunky but it seems to be much improved. Anyway, I have to get to sleep soon otherwise I’m going to be groggy later. I’ve been eating too much crystallized ginger tonight …
