iBooks 2-Life on Earth

I turned on my iDevices yesterday ad noticed that the red bad was lighted up instructing me to update my Apps. I hopped on my Wi-Fi, and looked to see what all the fuss was about and to my surprise there was an update for iBooks 2 featuring new interactive textbooks. Wish I had these when I was in school. After the update, I decided to have a look around and for some odd reason the first book I tried to find was an algebra book. Don’t know why I tried to find a book about algebra, was not my favorite topic in High School. Actually I did not mind algebra so much but had an awful teacher. On my way to browsing for algebra books I found a free preview textbook called  Life on Earth, a biology book by E.O. Wilson. The pictures looked really cool and it included videos. Its free so I pressed the download button. It was sort of late and the book was ~ 980 MB… that would take an hour or so to download… so I paused the download and went off to sleep. I resumed download earlier this evening and its still downloading as I type so I can’t say I’ve experienced the book quite yet. Just incase you did not get the invite Apple is now in the business of interactive electronic textbooks. Can’t wait until the download is finished to check this out. The textbooks are about $15 to think how much $ I could have saved on textbooks in College…  Mon $15 for a textbook? Granted you have to have an iDevice and Wi-Fi to download.  An iPad which is what I would use to view these books is ~$540, then you have to have Wi-Fi access to download which means some sort of broadband connection. These books aren’t exactly 10 MB so they are going to take a while in some of the areas with “crappy broadband connections.”  I hope that Apple release a cheaper iPad next Month or whenever the iPad 3 is coming out. It should not only be lighter in weight but lighter in price. If not to compete with the Kindle Fire at least to make the price point a little easier to swallow in these hard economic times. Perhaps the textbooks are a sign of more iPad 3 goodness???

Grab Your 1000 Minutes

AT&T LogoHey if you are one of the folks that did not jump ship when the Verizon iPhone made its debut and you are still with AT&T then AT&T is thanking you for being a loyal customer by giving away free 1000 rollover minutes. If you did not get the message (I did not)  hop in your favorite SMS app, and send off the message YES to 11113020 by March 31, 2011. Your account will be credited with 1000 bonus rollover minutes. I did just that and I got a message back right away “Thank you for accepting our free 1000 bonus minute offer. Please allow up to 4 weeks for processing.” Odd I did not know about this until today no wonder I was having trouble with the network earlier… they were probably getting slammed with these text and bogging down the AT&T network. I’m liking this competition between Verizon and AT&T its about time we had a little shake up in the market.

The Case of the iTunes 10 Icon

itunes_icons I finally downloaded iTunes 10 sometime last night. For those of us in the rural parts of the US without fast cable connections or blazing FIOS networks it takes a while to download a 84+ MB fil (1 double chocolate stout, two double chocolate stout :-) ) After the download and install I was greeted with a new icon on my desktop that I did not recognize. It was this blue bubble thing with a black music note in there. Woah! Too many double chocolates or did they change the icon????? Gone was the shiny CD with the floating note. I went online and did a search to get the icon for RocketDock (an app launcher for Windows  similar to to the Mac Dock) and saw all this hoopla about Steve Jobs defending the new  icon. My first thoughts were gosh people get worked up about the slightest things nowadays. Seriously if you don’t like an icon go roll your own in Photoshop or use the old one. I’m currently sporting the one found here. I think its kinda cute you can pick up some other ones by doing a search at Deviantart or Google for that matter. I guess some folks just like making contact with busy CEOs nowadays assuming that this is even true. Perhaps someone out there is just trying to drum up some Apple hate because of their iPhone 4 experience.

Scanning for colors on my iPhone

ist2_7179216-paint-can-paintbrush

I had to go to the store yesterday to pick-up another quart of paint since we didn’t get enough the first time. It was a batch that was color matched so I took a picture of the label that was on the can with my iPhone the evening before and presented this at the counter after entering the store.

I just handed the guy my iPhone and he was looking at it and tried to scan it because he could not make out the numbers in the lighting. The first time he tried to scan the photo it didn’t work so he gave it back and I zoomed in on the picture and handed it back to him. He scanned again and this time it worked beautifully and after adding the colors and mixing he handed me my paint and I went on my merry way. I was glad that the iPhone came in handy coz peeling that label off the can or having to take it back to the store would have been annoying. I suppose I could have looked for the color sample… not happening when things are all displaced in the house…
